How does Search Engine Optimisation work?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of tuning your website to improve your free listings on search engines. By employing SEO techniques you can help search engines to decide which keywords are relevant to your site, and improve your listings when those keywords are entered by a search engine user.
Keywords in this sense can consist of one or more words, for example "chiropractor" or "mobile phone". Finding the best keywords requires careful research; they should have high search volume on major search engines but it's important to avoid using keywords which are already targeted by websites with a much higher profile than you.
It's a good idea to have at least the front page of your website properly optimised.
How do I choose good keywords?
Choosing the right keywords for your site is crucial. You should ask several questions including:
| |
How many people search against a given keyword? |
How many websites compete for those keywords? |
What is the profile, link popularity and Page Rank of your competition? |
Are you powerful enough to compete on popular keywords? |
| |
Where do I put keywords I want to be found against?
Places you can use keywords to best effect are:
| |
Within your domain name |
Within your TITLE tag |
Within your other Meta tags |
Page headings and section headings |
Page wording/page content |
Image tags (ALT tags) |
| |
Take a look at our Keyword Research Services if you'd like help with this.
Remember that only plain text "typed" words can be understood by search engines; words within a picture or image won't be readable to them. Flash animation also falls into this category; while being fine for humans to view, search engines won't see any text within.
What is Keyword Density?
Your keyword density is a measure of how many times a keyword is used on a given page of your site. If it's too low you may not be found against that keyword, and if it's too high you may be penalised for "spamming".
Keyword density is expressed as a percentage of the keyword as a proportion of all words on the page. For each keyword or keyphrase you use, you should aim for a density from 3% to 7%.
Can "tricks" offer a short-cut to high listings?
In the old days the use of certain "tricks" may have helped a site's listings.
Some of the tricks were simple - using irrelevant keywords to draw in extra traffic, excessive repetition of keywords, white keywords on a white background and so on - while others were more sophisticated. Search engines have been around long enough now to learn about these tricks and using them may get you banned from search engines at any time - particularly on leading search engines such as Google.
