To perform well on search engines a website should contain basic elements called "Meta Tags". These tags are not always shown to visitors. They offer information to search engines, effectively allowing you to suggest the search terms you wish to appear against.
The most important Meta Tag is the Title Tag.
This tag is a great place to put desirable meta keywords but is visible both to human visitors and search engines so it must be carefully balanced to appeal to both. The Description Meta Tag is used to provide a short description of the contents of your web page, and is often used by search engines in the search results as a description of what your page contains. The Keywords Meta Tag is used by some search engines to identify the relevant search terms for your site. This tag is used mainly by the smaller search engines and is largely ignored by the larger search engines such as Google and Yahoo.
You can see if your Meta Tags are present and your default meta keywords by selecting "Source" from the "View" menu in Internet Explorer or Firefox. This shows you the underlying code which forms your site.
