How To Double Your Listings On Google

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Would you like your website listed twice in Google’s top 10 results for your most important keywords?

Although Google usually shows only one page from every site in the top results, it is possible to achieve two listings if you structure your web pages correctly.

This type of listing is called an indented listing. Google explains this type of listing as follows – “When Google finds multiple results from the same website, the most relevant result is listed first, with other relevant pages from that site indented immediately below it.”

Having an indented listing in Google’s search results means that you will have two listings on the first page instead of one. Obviously a double top 10 listing in Google will help to  increase the number of visitors to your website.

So how do you achieve indented listings for your targeted keywords?

Firstly, you must have a web page that already has a top 10 ranking for a specific keyword.

Create a second web page on the same domain that links to the web page that has the top 10 ranking. Optimise the second page for exactly the same keyword as the first page but make sure that different web page content is used, in order to avoid the Google “Duplicate Content” rule.

Then link from the first page to the second page using your targeted keyword as the anchor text. This is more effective if a contextual link is created within the actual web page content rather than creating a new navigational link within your main menu structure.

Once this has been done you will need to develop the link popularity of the second page by securing a number of One Way Links. Depending on how competitive your targeted keyword might be, a few high quality one way links may be sufficient to achieve the indented listing.

If you can achieve two listings on the first page of Google, then this will represent 20% of the top 10 organic results instead of the normal 10%.

That will improve your potential for increased visitor traffic enormously and ultimately your profit!

How to Earn More and Spend Less With Google Adwords

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Optimising your Google Adwords campaign is an ongoing process, but many people resort to a trial and error process that ends up costing them hundreds, even thousands of pounds from their marketing budget as they tweak and refine each ad campaign.

Google Adwords pioneers such as Perry Marshall, the author of The Definitive Guide to Google Adwords discusses this aspect of Google Adwords campaign management in great detail. He outlines specific steps and strategies for getting results as soon as you start your campaign, and offers suggestions on ways to refine your campaign as each day or week goes by.

You don’t have to throw your money away when you learn the tips and strategies that affiliate marketers and Adwords experts already know; you can actually end up spending less on your ads than competitors in your niche by picking specific keyword segments, monitoring your results and changing your ads regularly. Here are some essential tips for getting results with Google Adwords and spending as little money as possible during the process:

First: As much as possible, avoid aiming for top spot placement. Unknown to many, the first spot on the Google Sponsored Search results doesn’t always provide the best conversions compared to the second and third spots. Bidding for the second and third spots respectively, instead of the first one, can afford you greater exposure in your market at a lesser expense. A visitor searching for information is also more likely to scan down the list, so you have an almost-equal chance of getting picked and clicked with your ad placement.

Next, eliminate negative keywords from your list. It’s common to find that you get hundreds of clicks from a particular keyword or key phrase, but with very low conversion rates. This is usually the case when you have a ‘negative’ keyword in your ad, which means that people searching for that keyword and finding you are expecting something different.

Lastly, never bid on broad match keywords. It is a common practice but try to avoid doing this, as you will be wasting your precious time and money.

Refer to the ‘advertiser competition’ results to find the right keywords. If the bar is colored more than halfway, you may find that the bid price is expensive. Instead, observe those that have a low color indicator. Any keyword that is not highly competitive will also allow you to bid for a lower price. You can use the ‘exact match’ feature on the Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool to drill down your search.

You can utilise a variety of strategies to enhance your Google Adwords campaign so you can make the most of your advertising and to establish market reach. Apply any of these strategies or techniques as you optimise your Adwords program so you can start bidding on winning but with lower priced keywords.

Use Email Marketing To Make Even More Money

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Most people do not have a clue what an autoresponder is. An autoresponder service or software is used to automatically email a distribution list. You are probably asking yourself why would anyone use one? I bet that you get a lot of people doing the opt-in but not buying anything, right? How much money do you think you could make if you could email those same people another offer? All your hard work is being short changed by relying on a single impression of your website. Some statistics say that it will take some individuals up to seven impressions to decide about a product purchase.

You can send out daily offers to your opt-in list by using an autoresponder. Now you have extra opportunities to make a sale by mailing your list. It could be that the person was hungover or not thinking clearly when they first saw your offer. Suddenly they get your message and have no idea why they passed it up and decide to buy your product!

You should now realize why people claim “the money is in the list”. It’s true. Autoresponders will continue to mail more people as you add more opt-ins to your list. The larger your list the happier you will be! If you had a mailing list of a few thousand subscribers, you could email them all simultaneously and give them a new offer, just by clicking a button or two. But, you will have to use a strong autoresponder to be sure that your emails are not landing in people’s junk mailbox. Try searching Google for Best Autoresponders before deciding on one.

You could also look at the following searches before buying an autoresponder: AWeber vs. GetResponse and AWeber review. Do some researching before you buy an autoresponder because it can be tough finding a reliable service.

What is keeping you from making more money? Increase your income over night by getting an autoresponder!

Pay Per Click Advertising Down – Organic Search Engine Clicks Up

Pay Per Click Advertising

According to a new report by online intelligence experts Hitwise, there has been a substantial drop in the overall share of Pay Per Click Advertising traffic, compared to the amount of traffic generated from the organic or natural search engine listings.

Whilst total search engine traffic is still on the increase, the market share for Pay Per Click advertising appears to have dropped significantly.

According to the Hitwise Report “the share of traffic coming from Search Engine Advertising is decreasing at the expense of organic traffic.”

“In the four weeks to May 9, 2009, 7.25% of search engine traffic to all categories of websites was from paid clicks. This compares to 9.84% in the same four week period in 2008 – representing a 26% decline in the share of paid clicks. This trend is apparent across 16 of the 17 Hitwise parent categories (i.e. Automotive, Food and Beverage, Health and Medical, etc). The only category that didn’t see a decline in paid traffic was Education, which received 1.45% of search visits from paid clicks compared to 1.39% last year.”

Heather Hopkins from Hitwise says “I’m sure that marketing budgets are tightening up with cost management pressures, but maybe the drop in paid search’s share is more a reflection of changing search behavior. It’s been a well documented fact that organic listings carry more credibility and trust with searchers than their paid listing counterparts – so perhaps this provides more insight into the trend. Tough times force searchers/buyers to become more diligent in researching purchases, which sees them reverting to sources they trust more.”

This trend highlights the importance of making sure that your website is properly optimised and made as search engine friendly as possible. With the proliferation of search engine advertising over the past few years, many website owners have placed Professional SEO on the back burner. This changing search behaviour suggests that now, more than ever, that website owners should consider moving their Web Page Optimisation efforts higher up the list of priorities.

However, whilst search engine advertising may be losing some of its share to organic search results, it is still driving sizable traffic referrals – and should not be ignored.

Are Google XML Sitemaps Effective?

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Sitemaps are an ideal way for website owners to help search engines crawl deeper and index more pages on their sites.

A lot of websites have a dedicated web page that contains links to all of the sites internal pages. This is primarily used to assist the user in navigating around a website and can be very useful, especially on large websites containing hundreds of pages. Additionally this type of Sitemap provides additional navigation links for search engines, which will help them to find more of your sites internal pages.

However in 2005 Google announced an ‘approved’ XML Sitemap format as the preferred method for indexing websites. This was quickly adopted by Yahoo and MSN. An XML Sitemap is actually a source file which is uploaded to your server. This file will be found by the search engines and used as their preferred navigation route, when indexing your web pages.

I review many websites where a number of internal pages have not been indexed by Google and installing an XML Sitemap will help the search engines to find these non indexed web pages.

Until now, there has been very little research to determine how effective XML Sitemaps really are. However, Google have recently published a detailed XML Sitemaps study, which provides us with an insight into their effectiveness.

The purpose of the Google study was to measure XML Sitemap usage over the last few years in order to determine how Sitemap files have improved the following:

  • Coverage – how effective are Sitemaps at assisting Google to crawl the web deeper and find new content that it might not have found previously
  • Freshness – do Sitemaps assist Google to crawl new or updated content faster, when compared to the normal crawl.

The study was based on three large websites, Amazon, CNN, and Pubmed.

Amazon’s sitemaps include around 20 million URLs. They also make every effort to indicate the best URL versions, of product pages in their XML sitemap.

CNN’s approach to XML sitemaps focuses upon helping search engines find the many new URLs which are added daily.

Pubmed contains a large archive of URLs listed in their XML sitemaps, however these are only updated on a monthly basis.

This is quite a detailed study with the final paper being 10 pages long. It is a great read if you are interested in understanding how Google Sitemaps work and how they can benefit your website. Download a copy here.

Some interesting facts from the study:

  • Approximately 35 million Sitemaps were published, as of October 2008.
  • The 35 million Sitemaps include “several billion” URLs.
  • Most popular Sitemap formats include XML (77%), Unknown (17.5%), URL list (3.5%), Atom (1.6%) and RSS (0.11%).
  • 58% of URLs in Sitemaps contain the last modification date.
  • 7% of URLs contain the change frequency field.
  • 61% of URLs contain the priority field.

If you are not using XML Sitemaps on your website, then this study highlights the need for you to consider adding them.
